In tis recognised that inter-module data communication will be a cornerstone technology for future platform-based military systems. This paper arises out of work undertaken on behalf of the UK MoD to study and report on the suitability of different data transmission standards for future avionics systems. The specific standards studied were STANAG 3910, ANSI FDDI and the SAE ring and linear buses. The project addressed a wide range of issues and involved contributions from Biritsh Aerospace, Ferranti Computer Systems, GEC Avionics and Smiths Industries, with ERA Techology acting as prime contractor. The implementation issues addressed by the project included support implications for each candidate databus, differences in terminal and system implementation, vulnerability to threats and the constraints involved in using fibre optics for avionic applications
