NASA designers frequently use high voltage ceramic disc capacitors for filtering and smoothing, in power supplies. Driven by the need for increased volumetric efficiency, NASA has evaluated high voltage multilayer ceramic capacitors (HVMLCs) for space flight use. Electrical and environmental tests were performed to show part reliability with respect to the space flight environment. AC and DC partial discharge tests were included in the test plan to investigate their effectiveness as nondestructive screens for potential life test failures. It was found that an unexpected mechanism stimulated the majority of the life test failures. A much more effective screening method can now be developed.
