General purpose processing requirements for military applications are incresing dramatically. The cost of developing these high end processing solutions has become prohibitively expensive for small and medium volume applications. With today's downward pressures on the defense budget, the more military contractors will require off the shelf processing solutions to remain competitive. The commercial market has shown that this may only be accomplished with open bus architectures and proper software development tools. This paper discusses how standard interfaces, emphasizing design to cost, and a product oriented approach to military processing were achieved for the STAR MVP, a MIL-SPEC R3000 based VME single board computer.
