Fiber optic sensors have been developed to a level of maturity such that virtually every conceivable physical quantity can be measured, at least in the laboratory environment. Their potential for use is based on a number of attributes primarily, size, weight, flexibility, and environmental survivability. Currently, however, cost is not competitive with many existing devices (such as pressure transducers), and applications have necessarily concentrated on those domains where existing technology is either inadequate or impossible. This paper concentrates on the impact on structural monitoring and hostile enviromment measurement, with particular emphasis on 'smart' or 'intelligent' structure applications. Performance issues and system elements are discussed as well as constraints imposed by vehicle environments.
