In 1993, the USSR will launch a Space Radio Telescope called Radioastron. Radioastron will be based in conjunction with terrestrial Very Long Base Interferometer (VLBI) networks to synthesize a radio telescope with an effective diameter of up to 75.000 km. Australia has joined a number of nations participating in the programme, designing, manufacturing and testing the L-Band Receiver. This paper discusses the Australian Radioastron programme, outlining the design and construction of the L-Band Receiver. The L-Band Receiver physically consists of two units, a dual channel Low Noise Amplifier (LNA) and Down Converter. The LNA receives its signals from a specially designed coaxial feed, which separates left and right hand polarised signals and amplifies them for down conversion to a nominal 512 MHz IF (Intermediate Frequency). Provision is also made for monitor and control.
