Antiblock-Braking-System (ABS) is an important contribution to active safety. It is available for passenger cars and commercial vehicles. The European Community will demand obligatory introduction for certain commercial vehicles from 1991. The main targets of ABS are: Full stability, steering stability, short braking distance. ABS consists of the following components: Wheel speed sensor, electronic control module, pressure-modulation valve. It can be installed in trucks, tractors, busses, trailers and semitrailers. Various types of control function fulfill the demands of the different vehicles. Minor changes will include traction control function. Since the introduction in 1978 the high quality standard has made an important contribution to the positive status enjoyes ABS today.
