This paper describes recent advances in component and subsystem technology which has enabled systems in the 30 - 100 GHz frequency region to be realised, and open up new markets previously unavailable due to the excessively high costs associated with millimetre wave systems. The vehicle selected to demonstrate these technologies is a fully integrated solid state 94 GHz FMCW transceiver. This paper describes the unit in detail covering the design concept, built standard, choice of transmission medium, and semiconductor devices used. Criteria such as suitability for harsh military environments, small unit size and a very low production cost have been addressed.
