Lucas Automotive Advanced Engineering Centre is undertaking research to develop sensors which will provide information about the friction coefficient by measuring the texture and covering of the road surface. This information is required in order to improve braking performance. The optical sensors currently under developent include a laser displacement sensor for measuring macrotexture, a surface wetness sensor based on the Brewster angle, a speed-over-ground sensor, and infra-red sensors for measuring road temperature. The information from these sensors is combined with data from vehicle dynamics and environmental sensors in a data fusion approach to solving the problem of friction prediction.
