Electrostatic charging and arc discharge on thin films of spacecraft dielectric materials are simulated in a laboratory by irradiating a monoenergetic electron beam. Materials irradiated are Teflon, Mylar and Kapton. Minimum beam energies that cause arc discharges are investigated under the pressure of less than 10-4 Pa. Some of the previously reported conditions of surface discharges are not reproduced. Analysis using a mass spectrograph suggests that molecules attached to the surface are affecting the discharge condition.
