A billion (109) shot flashlamp has been developed under NASA Contract for spaceborne laser missions, which require lifetimes exceeding 0.5 billion shots. Lifetime limiting mechanisms have been identified and addressed in order to achieve this goal, pushing the state-of-the-art of dispenser cathode technology far beyond its previous limits.
