The U.S. Army Avionics R a. D Activity (AVRADA) has been actively involved with research and development of voice interactive systems for use in Army helicopter cockpits. Voice recognition and its application as an alternative input/output technique promises to be an effective method of reducing pilot workload and making both the pilot and copilot/aerial observer more effective on the battle field. This paper will discuss the work that has been done to date applying voice recognition in the Army helicopters cockpit. It will outline flight test criteria, results and 'lessons learned'.
