The military is developing standards to define new communications systems and protocols based on fiber optic Local Area Networks (LANs). This paper describes the work of the Survivable Adaptable Fiber Optic Embedded Networks (SAFENET) Committee and its approach to network development. It covers the criteria established for selection of a fiber optic LAN and the family of LANs selected by those criteria.
