Navigation of a road vehicle from one location to another differs considerably from sea and air navigation because the vehicle is essentially constrained to a finite network of streets and roads, with only occasional excursions into driveways, parking lots, etc. This makes it possible to apply computer algorithms utilizing road map information stored in digitally encoded form to correlate a vehicle's path (approximated by dead reckoning or other navigation means) with the digital map to maintain accurate knowledge of the vehicle's location within the defined road network. Generally called map matching, this process is used in a wide variety of contemporary and developmental systems for vehicular navigation and route guidance and, in conjunction with radio data communication links, for remotely monitoring vehicle location from dispatch or control centers.
