Operational and market research found that there was little enthusiasm for vehicle position to be displayed to drivers, especially in commerical vehicle cabs, but there ws a positive requirement for centralised displays in fleet operations rooms. Development of the system therefore included position reporting which was closely integrated with the navigation part of the system. The full system has been operational for about one year and has already reached the stage of providing continuous commercial service throughout the Midlands and South East England: plans are well advanced to expand the system into the rest of the United Kingdom and introduce it into the rest of Europe. The system can be subdivided into three main sub-systems although these are integrated and interdependent: - a) Navigation b) Position reporting c) Data gathering and display. The system philosophy pays great attention to the need to operate continuously without breaks; this is achieved by a high level of redundancy with hot capabilities. The only component in the system which is not, at least, duplicated is the vehicle equipment itself although where a very high reliability is needed a second vehicle unit can be installed.
