In this paper a new system for traffic flow measurement is presented ('AVES'). It is based on a 61 GHz Millimeterwave Doppler Radar sensor and real time digital signal processing of the Doppler echoes to determine traffic parameters (velocity, length, class of vehicle, number of vehicles per time unit etc.). Thus small volume of the sensor, stationary as well as mobile application and high precision of the resulting vehicle velocities are some of the advantages compared to conventional solutions such as inductive loops. By appropriate modulation of the transmitted radar signal this system will be extendable to include data transmission to the vehicle.
