Energy reclamation can be achieved in commuter railways by using traction motors to feed power back into the system during braking. Methods of doing this on d.c. commuter lines are described along with the necessary electrical protection techniques. Regeneration is advocated for 25kV a.c. supplies as well as the more usual d.c. systems. A number of GEC ALSTHOM installations are illustrated and their particular features discussed.
