This paper describes a collaborative project between the GEC-Marconi Research Centre and Marconi Defence Systems for developing a computerized assistant to improve the maintenance cycle of Naval communications equipment. The paper focuses on an understanding of the nature of the maintenance cycle and a model of the fault-finding and repair process. The model outlined can be seen as a top level specification for a computer program utilizing Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) techniques.
