The paper brings together and analyses, through the use of dimensionless parameters, the measurements of windage loss on many gears. The results enable a good estimate of the windage lost of most gears to be made, provided the effective density and viscosity of the atmosphere in which the gear is running is known. Unfortunately no particular advice can be given on likely values of these two parameters, so further study is underway.
