The Class 91 locomotive for the British Railways Board has been designed to operate at speeds of up to 225 km/h with low track forces on the newly electrified East Coast Main Line. The four body mounted, separately excited, dc traction motors are each rated at 1135 kW. The power and control circuits incorporate microprocessor/thyristor control with the power converter being oil cooled. The locomotives have undertaken a full commissioning and test programme on the track.
