The development of this helicopter altimeter was initiated by the requirement of precise altitude measurement in the region close to the ground. Especially in case of helicopter emergency landings without engine power or training of these procedures where so called autorotation landings have to be carried out a precise height information is essential for a smooth touch down since the available rotor energy for correcting maneuvres is very limited. During this autorotation procedure the helicopter descends with a tail down attitude in order to decrease forward speed immediately until the helicopter is set to ground horizontally. An important design goal that is not met by existing available equipments is to measure the helicopter altitude within a range of a few hundred meters for a correct initiation of the autorotation maneuvre, to control the descent by tracking the ground return signal with high range resolution and to provide height information of the tail rotor with sufficient precision at very short distances to avoid ground impact.
