The ever-increasing pressure to minimize the period between capital commitment to a vessel and its operational status inevitably causes dilemmas for the alarm and monitoring system supplier. The list of instrumentation emerges from the plant designers only when their work is complete, and is subject to change once commissioning starts. A GEC multi-processor architecture has become available which overcomes the need for software engineers to be available to make these changes. Its operating system is totally proven, and the software can be identical on any vessel. There are no rotating magnetic stores. Tandem central processor systems are an option, which makes the system configurable for Machinery Control, Alarm and Surveillance (MCAS) to Lloyd's Rules. This paper describes the system, and its use is illustrated by brief descriptions of the Unicontrol alarm and monitoring system used in the re-engining exercise on the QE2, for which it was the basis, and a typical application to a military development.
