In any potential future conflict that involved the intrusion of hostile aircraft, surveillance radars could need to resist a wide range of countermeasures, especially barrage and deception jamming, chaff, antiradiation missiles and Stealth aircraft. In a bistatic radar system, the vulnerability of the passive, covert receiver to all forms of direct attack is removed, or at least markedly reduced. Higher PRFs can be employed to provide the doppler measurement capability needed to discriminate against chaff, while the bistatic geometry should reduce the effectiveness of radar cross-section (RCS) reduction techniques based on body shaping. The transmitter is, of course, still vulnerable to direct physical attack, but a bistatic receiver can operate with the target illuminations provided by several monostatic radars, or by its own dedicated mobile illuminators.
