The electrical design of single-sided linear induction motors (SLIMs) for transport puposes is discussed. The outline of SLIM design and the determination method of the design parameters are described. The method of decreasing the vertical force is described too. The performance characteristics are calculated using a space harmonic analysis presented by the authors. The primary core should be designed long, narrow and thin. The motor length of approximately 8 m, 4 m and 2.5 m would be appropriate for high speed 300 km/h SLIMs, middle speed 100 km/h SLIMs and low speed 40 km/h SLIMs, respectively. The pole pitch also is an important dimension. The suitable value will be about 300 mm regardless of the speed. The flux density should be selected in relatively low value from 0.2 T to 0.5 T in order to decrease the vertical force as well as the magnetizing current.
