The automotive applications have tended to use the simpler and cheaper processors, but in some applications, these have reached the limit of achievable performance, and there is not a simple incremental change possible; one of the main reasons for this is that programmers have had to use assembly language rather than a high level language in order to get the required performance. High level language implementations have traditionally not been very efficient on the lower end microcomputers in the past. This paper will show that by taking an integrated approach to the subject and looking at revolutionary rather than evolutionary ideas, simpler and cheaper to develop and maintain systems are possible. Although these ideas are currently used in high performance computers, there is a high probability that they will be used in one form or another in automotive applications within the next five years. It has been shown that there are a large number of benefits in using hardware and software that have been designed together, such as formal verification, expandability, relative machine independence, integral communications, task scheduling etc.
