The automotive electronics industry is at a major milestone in its brief 25-year history. During that time it has evolved to a very high level of technical sophistication. Stage Three, which is characterized by extensive function integration of systems, will bring even greater improvements in automobile performance and reliability. The system technology that is now evolving is providing the foundation for the emergence of Stage Four. Techniques of artificial intelligence will be more widely used. Collision warning systems will become true collision avoidance systems where computers react many times faster than the most skillful driver to manoeuver both vehicles out of danger. Navigation will include optimum vehicle guidance provided by guidewire control on major highways. Sometime later, an expert system will act as co-pilot and navigator. When that happens, the automobile that drives itself will have become a reality.
