'High tech' in automotive electronics stands for microcomputer and digital information processing, today, while 'low tech' in this context means analog technique with active and passive components without 'intelligence'. In the field of body electrics and electronics many features seem to be oversized and even unnecessary to be realized by microcomputers, at first glance. In this paper under consideration we will give an overview of the field of body electronics in a wider sense, analyze the state of the art and show how a system optimization can be done. The electronics of the New BMW 7' series will give examples. Some future aspects close the paper. These considerations show that it is increasingly important to integrate the electronics as parts having equal rights and not as 'pick-a-pack' solutions. The philosophy of the car manufacturers and the design of the electronics must still be better harmonized. To achieve this, there must be a closer cooperation between car manufacturer, supplier and semiconductor industry. Only by this way, problems of reliability, volumes, prices, operability and serviceability will be minimized and automotive electronics will have a firm place in the car. More then ever, the customer decides the success of our automobiles and the electronics in it.
