The paper provides an overview about the background of the European Hermes electrical power supply development as far as KOH-fuel cells are concerned and informs about the present status of the work. First of all a short listing of the basic requirements on the fuel cell power supply is given followed by a brief discussion of the present state-of-the-art stack hardware of European companies as the available technology when starting the development. A flow scheme of a mobile KOH system is presented as one candidate among others for realization, benefits and critical items are discussed. The paper ends with a consideration of necessary steps in the future to achieve the goal to have the Hermes fuel cell flight hardware ready in the mid nineties.
