Military Space Missions during the next decade will require reliable sources of electrical power. The primary need will be for survivable, cost effective, high performance space power systems for meeting the steady-state power demands of advanced surveillance, communications, meteorological and nagivation satellites. Most of these mission requirements may be met by advanced solar array/battery power systems, Solar Thermal Dynamic Power Systems, Dynamic Isotope Power Systems and Space Nuclear Reactor Power Systems. Review of the Military Space Systems Technology Plan (MSSTP) documentation indicates that most of the mission power requirements in the next decade will fall into the range from a few kilowatts to tens of kilowatts with an upper bound of perhaps 100 kilowatts. Accordingly, this paper addresses power systems options which can be developed in the next decade for steady-state power levels to 100 kilowatts. This is not to imply that current research on longer range, multi-hundred kilowatt baseload and multi-megawatt burst mode power technology is not important. Steady progress is, in fact, being made toward SDI related power technology needs. This work is not addressed here because in simply is not the proper forum for discussion of the results.
