The paper describes design studies on an axle-mounted permanent magnet alternator for use in a rheostatic braking system for railway permanent magnet radial- and axial-field configurations, based on Nd-Fe-B magnets, are considered. However, it is shown that the radial-field design provides the better power-to-weight ratio. The paper discusses the strategy adopted to evolve a design which meets a typical performance specification for a high-speed-train.
