In recent years, the need to replace life-expired signalling equipment with more efficient, flexible systems and to provide accurate train information for both operating personnel and passengers, has resulted in the development of many computer-based projects for use on London Underground. The computer-based signalling projects form part of 'non-vital' or 'vital' (Fail Safe) systems. Although both types of system require reliability, long-term support and straightforward maintenance, the safety of vital systems must be thoroughly verified before introduction on the railway.
