Optical Fibre Technology has gained a firm hold in the communications industry, as witnessed by conferences such as the present one, but its presence in other areas such as aerospace, industrial control and the automotive market is as yet far less self-confident. The reasons for this are many, but in this paper I shall concentrate on the automotive market, its specific problems and opportunities, and I shall describe some of the work which is being done to overcome these problems and to introduce fibre optic techniques into road vehicles. The automotive market is a notoriously hostile one, both in a physical as well as a commercial sense. As a consumer product a motor vehicle is manufactured to a price and competition is fierce. Routes by which technological innovations enter the field are complex, and of course include legislation, (for instance for safety, fuel conservation or reduced atmospheric pollution), but apart from these cases the customer needs to be convinced that any technological advance has a clear advantage either in cost or in acceptability of the vehicle.
