The experimental locomotive designated BB10004 was actually a reconverted single-phase BB15000 locomotive: its high voltage power equipment modified, and its DC traction motors replaced by synchronous motors. The first series of experiments helped to assess the advantages of this mode of transmission as applied to traction. The next phase of experiments was aimed at defining globally the power circuit and auxiliary circuit diagrams for a new class of all-purpose dual current locomotives. Two dual current BB22200 locomotives were stripped down, their bodies used to build two other experimental locos, namely locos BB20011 and BB20012 which have been under-going tests for the past two years. They have been used to check electrical arrangements coming into this new designed equipment. The results of prototypes tests were very impressive and French Railways decided to order a series of 44 dual-current locomotives BB26000 class (the first locomotive will be in operation during the fourth quarter 87).
