The principles of linear motors are now well known from extensive theoretical and experimental studies over the past three decades. This work has led to specialised applications for example in steelworks, conveyor systems and in transportation. Recent applications under investigation include missile and space vehicle launchers, and space applications where friction becomes a major problem. Parallel developments of high power semiconductor devices have now eased the problem of controlling speed by varying the driving frequency of the electronic power source. It is now possible to produce linear motors continuously rated to over 1 MW with peak thrusts in excess of 40 kN. However, the use of linear motors to propel rail and other guided vehicles has only recently been put to commercial use, although the advantage of frictionless thrust and braking was recognised very early in their development. This led to many experimental guided transport systems using a variety of types of linear motors.
