Autotransformer supply schemes are increasingly used for AC electrification to take advantage of 2 x 25 kV power transmission, while retaining the use of standard 25 kV trainborne equipment. Such schemes have the obvious advantage of increasing the distance over which traction energy can be transmitted from a single bulk power supply, while maintaining the received voltage within IEC or similar national standards. In AC railway electrification, earth return current effects are particularly important and the never autotransformer scheme has quite different characteristics from the more commonly used booster transformer arrangements. This paper provides an assessment of these effects, in a typical 30 km section of single track railway, using parameters generally based on existing CCITT recommendations and practice. The assessment is based upon general purpose software, developed at the University of Birmingham, which provides accurate flexible models for a variety of power supply arrangements.
