As a result of the rapid and far-reaching development of semiconductor components, the static d.c. converter now offers many advantages over a rotary converter for supply of the on-board power network in electrical rail vehicles. It is not only the low maintenance requirement of the static converter which is important here, but it is also the lower weight, the smaller dimensions and the higher efficiency which give the static system an advantage over the rotary converter. Setting up an auxiliary power supply is more then just engineering a converter, first of all one has to decide what principle is chosen to convert the d.c. line voltage to the desired voltage and in the second place the wishes of the customers have to be fulfilled, c.q. minimum in maintenance weight, dimensions and last but not least in price. This paper explains the electrical design of a series of auxiliary power supplies as well as the mechanical layout.
