With the maturing of gallium arsenide (GaAs) based digital integrated circuit (IC) technology, the evaluation of computable functions at gigabaud throughput rates is becoming feasible. This paper reviews synchronous pipelined (systolic) array concepts. A Hadamard transformer is discussed as a good, if primitive, example of an all digital channelizer (with greater than 500 MHz input bandwidth). As soon as multi-bit analog-to-digital (greater than 8 bits per sample) converters meeting military requirements are available, high-performance Fourier transformers will be built. This will be one of the first steps toward all-digital ESM (receivers for electronic warfare) systems.
