In recent years we have seen an increase in the use of 1553 B buses in new aircraft designs and programs to retrofit the bus into existing systems. Since the 1553 B bus is an one megabit bus with a complex protocol, investigations have been made to reduce the host processor overhead. This paper describes the performance, physical and electrical characteristics of the LITEF MIL-STD-1553 B VLSI circuit. The LITEF Interface Controller Chip (LINC 1553) is designed to off-load the host processor from all 1553 B dependent tasks, while offering all three operational modes: Bus Controller, Remote Terminal and Monitor. The LINC 1553 is an Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) using the 2-micron HCMOS standard cell approach. A thorough discussion of the hardware architecture and the software programming features which allow maximum flexibiltiy, is included.
