Development of expert systems for avionics applications in an area of intense activity in the aerospace industry. The next step in the evolution of prototype avionics expert systems will be to demonstrate that the functionality of the systems displayed in laboratory systems can be carried over to embedded real-time systems. The development environment of current expert systems is characterized by special hardware architectures, symbolic processing languages, and highly dynamic run-time environments that do not conform to the rigorous timing and sizing requirements of real-time embedded system applications. In addition an expert system running in an embedded environment must be pre-emtible. To make the transition to embedded systems, inferencing facilities and a special support environment will need to be developed for systems running on embedded hardware.
