Recent advances in digital mapping technology, coupled with the increasing availability of accurate terrain elevation and feature data, have spawned a wide of display types and operational capabilities. Although this technology exists today, the question remains, 'How can digital map technology be best applied to aid the pilot in completing a mission successfully?' This paper discusses the myriad of options available to the avionics system integrator and the trade-offs necessary to insure maximum benefit with minimum pilot workload.
