Currently, crew system development efforts are concentrated relatively late in the weapon system acquisition cycle, rely extensively on time consuming and labor intensive manual methods, remain highly subjective, and are not standardized. To rectify these problems, the Air Force established an advanced development project titled Cockpit Automation Technology (CAT). The CAT program is partitioned into three technical phases: definition, development and demonstration. This paper will review the Phase 1 technical objectives and industry definition approaches. In addition, the mission analysis demonstration software developed by each of the three industry teams will be described and evaluated for it's potential contribution to the crew system design process.
