A real time algorithm that computes an indicator for beyond visual range (BVR) air-to-air combat situation assessment is described. The algorithm helps the pilot determine the effectiveness of his aircraft/missile system against an opposing aircraft/missile system. The goal is to develop a measure of effectiveness that goes beyond the ownship missile launch range currently displayed to the pilot. In addition to ownship lethality, the algorithm also considers ownship vulnerability. The algorithm has been built and tested. CPU time is under 0.25 seconds. The output is an approximation of the number of seconds from the time the Blue aircraft can disengage until it must disengage. It can disengage when the Blue missile goes autonomous against the Red target. It must disengage at some point to avoid the Red missile launch. This performance measure is called the Blue Time Advantage (BTA), the predicted time that will be available to the pilot in the near future during the hottest part of the engagement.
