A great deal of attention has been directed at the development of advanced cockpits, aircrew interfaces, and intelligent aids for future aircraft. These topics are seldom discussed in the context of strategic warfare, even though the strategic environment, both the aircraft and the mission, are better suited and in greater need of these advanced technologies than their fighter counterparts. Strategic mission accomplishment has become more difficult as enemy defenses have become more effective and the targets more mobile. These complexities generate tremendous increases in the quantity and intricacy of inflight aircrew decisions. This paper outlines some strategic inflight mission management issues, then sketches an on-board mission manager that uses artificial intelligence techniques.
