The expert system developed by Boeing for the CEPS program employes features such as functional partioning, multiple 'layer' rules, and multiple 'path' rules. This structure was developed to enhance speed, maintainability, and flexibility. Functional partioning limits the number of rules the expert system must exercise, multiple layers provides a simpler and more maintainable structure, and multiple paths allows for missing elements in the expert system's facts base. CEPS is a leading Air Force program for the application of a large expert system, the concepts discussed provide practical solutions to some of the 'real world' considerations that must be dealt with to make CEPS effective.
