Communication requirements in tactical and field environments dictate that mobile, reliable, secure and integrated voice and data services be provided. These demands call for a new generation of voice/data switches. Attributes that acceptable switches must have are enumerated. We present an evaluation of existing and/or proposed switches and switching schemes for such applications; these include: ITT System 12 switch element, R-switch concept, GTE Burst (link and hub) Switches, Delta switch concept, BBN Pluribus and current PBX's. A list of suggestions that enhance system survivability, security, protocol and performance is then presented.
