A unique field weakening electric powertrain was developed utilizing concepts and features derived from an evaluation of motor/controller systems representing different configurations of electric vehicle powertrains. The study included the design, build, and test of powertrain systems using control systems of varying complexity and cost. The configurations examined included simple field current modulated powertrains and more complex control systems which used solid state devices to directly control armature current. Also evaluated were alternating current motor technologies. While the a.c. systems appeared to offer the most advantage for long term development, the simplicity and reliability of field controlled d.c. motors provided the most attractive near term system. Therefore, a project was initiated to develop an improved field controlled d.c. powertrain which would eliminate the control and driveability constraints of previous systems. The powertrain utilized a separately excited d.c. traction motor, design optimized for electric vehicle propulsion in a joint effort between Ford Motor Company and Reliance Electric Company.
