A Fault Tolerant Electrical Power System (FTEPS) is being developed under Air Force contract F33615-85-C-2504. The FTEPS design incorporates sufficient levels of redundancy and integration to provide, ultra high reliable electric power for flight critical loads on a future fighter aircraft. Control and management of the FTEPS is distributed in the Power System Processors (PSPs), Electrical Load Management Centers (ELMCs) and Remote Terminals (RTs). Essential to management and distribution of power is the software that will be developed and integrated in the PSPs, ELMCs, and RTs. The software will be written in Ada Higher Order Language (HOL) and developed using a Structured Analysis and Structured Design approach. This paper describes the software design for the FTEPS program, and the design issues that arose during software development. Primarily, they include the distributed processing control functions, MIL-STD-1553B data bus control, timing analysis, user interface, data management, processing efficiency, software transportability, adaptability, development, and problems associated with using Ada HOL.
