Modern windshield design is becoming increasingly complex and the shape of the cross bending has to be carefully controlled in order to avoid optical distortion. The present development work on gravity bending focuses on both the heating and bending arrangements, as well as an online system for the measurement of the curvature with feedback for improved process control. A vitally important step is pre-heating, either radiation (from above) or convection. The latter method has a lower energy consumption and shorter heater times with a more uniform rise in the glass temperature prior to bending. In the bending zones either movable heaters or reflective fixed heaters are used. The heating elements can be individually controlled to give a very precise control of the temperature according to the windshield shape, e.g. the wing or corner areas. Cost savings in investment and production are the main reasons for the development of gravity-base solutions instead of press or press-assist technologies.
