Phthalonitrile polymer offers many advantages as a high temperature composite matrix material. The salient features of this resin are that it can be easily processed into void-free components and the cured resin exhibits very high thermal and oxidative stability. Prepreg tape made from a B-staged prepolymer can be stored indefinitely under ambient conditions. High quality unidirectional composite panels have been successfully processed in an autoclave for mechanical properties evaluation. Preliminary data reveal that the phthalonitrile composites exhibit mechanical properties that are either superior or comparable to the state-of-the-art PMR-15 composites. The flexure and transverse tensile properties are far superior to those of PMR-15 composite, the shear strength is slightly lower than that reported for PMR-15 composite. The Tg of the as-cured panels is in excess of 350 deg C where as those subjected to an elevated temperature postcure do not exhibit a Tg up to 400 deg C. Thus, the phthalonitrile class of composites show promise for aerospace applications
