Moderne industrielle Bauteile wie z.B. Bauteile fuer Gasturbinen sollen in zunehmendem Masse effizienter arbeiten und eine laengere Lebensdauer aufweisen. Dies setzt voraus, dass sie das Problem der sie umgebenden Atmosphaere und Temperatur besser verkraften. Gefordert werden verbesserte physikalische, chemische und thermische Eigenschaften ihrer Oberflaeche und somit Verbesserungen der Beschichtung und der Beschichtungstechnologie. Der Artikel beschreibt Technologien wie die von Union Carbide entwickelte Detonationskanone und die Beschichtung durch Plasmaspritzbrenner.

    The drive towards improved efficiency and enhanced performance means that engineering operating environments are becoming increasingly more hostile. In providing front line defences for components against degradation, surfaces are called upon to perform functions widely different from that of the bulk materials. In one of the most demanding applications, that of the gas turbine, components operate in environments which are uniquely complex and aggressive. The design and production of surfaces capable of providing mechanical, chemical and thermal resistance is of crucial importance in attaining engine performance targets. This article describes how surfaces are engineered to meet this challenge.
