The recent advancement of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) transformed the lighting industry into a rapidly growing business sector. Currently, solid-state lighting technology is penetrating deeply into various market segments, such as automotive lighting, indoor and outdoor lighting, medical applications and also lifestyle products. A recent United States Department of Energy report states that this technology is expected to reduce energy consumption in the lighting sector by 15% in 2020 and by 40% in 2030 - saving 261 TWh in 2030 alone, worth over US$26 billion in savings at today's energy prices and equivalent to the current total energy consumption of about 24 million homes in the United States. Furthermore, with the given mix of power plants these energy savings would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by roughly 180 million tons of CO2. Even though in many cases the initial cost of these devices is still above that of incumbent light sources, higher operating efficiencies and longer lifetimes make LEDs highly competitive on a life-cycle basis. Strategies Unlimited estimated that 400 million LED lamps were sold globally in 2013, and according to McKinsey the global market share of LEDs in general lighting will amount to about 45% in 2016 and nearly 70% in 2020. The market volume in this segment is expected to increase from currently around US$26 billion to more than US$72 billion in 2020. An LED device is a complex multicomponent system, allowing a distinct adjustment of performance characteristics to certain demands. In the following, several aspects of LED chip design for white light generation and other applications are discussed.
